Celebreties with Disorders
Two current celebrities that use their mental disorders for the better are Adam Duritz from the band Counting Crows and Ty Pennington, who is best known from the television show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Adam Duritz, like Luna, has the mental disorder of dissociation. In an interview Adam attempts to explain his mental disorder:
"This [is] not depression. This [is] not workaholism. I
have a fairly severe mental illness that makes it hard to do my job -- in fact,
makes me totally ill-suited for my job. I have a form of dissociative disorder
that makes the world seem like it's not real, as if things aren't taking place.
It's hard to explain, but you feel untethered. "
Adam’s dissociation causes him to become emotionally unattached in relationships with other people and only focus on his job. He has beenrecovering slowly and in the meantime recorded the double album Saturday nights and Sunday Mornings. He claims everything he went through was put into the albums. Adam describes “Saturday Nights, [as] vicious and loud” and “Sunday Mornings [as] quieter -- the day after.” The albums are a depiction of his life and how he felt in his dissociation. While under the influence of a mental disorder, Adam still manages to create music which keeps his band in business and playing for fans everywhere.
Ty Pennington considers himself the “poster child” for ADHD but despite his mental disorder he has changed the lives of thousands of families. Many who read the Harry Potter series and think Luna is a bit crazy, but the following is an excerpt from an interview with Ty which makes him seem crazier than she. He speaks of atime when his mother, who at the time was working on becoming a child psychologist, sat in and observed him in class.
"What was really interesting was that my mom was
actually studying to be a child psychologist at the time, and went to my
elementary school to test the worst kid they had. She was pretty shocked when
the principal and the administration sent me up there. She was like, “Oh, my
God!” and I was like, “Hey, what’s up?”Then she observed me in class and within
30 minutes, I was wearing my desk. I swung to the blinds, I climbed out the
windows, I ran around naked, and I slapped Johnny in the back of the head. So I was
what you call a classic distraction."
Ty is now the leader of a television show called Extreme Makeover: Home Edition which features his team building houses for those in need in only seven days. He is such an influential person to television viewers across America that he received“Motivator of the Year” award in 2007.
