Why Should All This Affect the Way We Think?
Through out many of Luna's years at Hogwarts she is mocked and made fun of for being different. Then she finally finds Harry, Hermione, and Ron and joins their group of friends. Because this friendship developed, Luna was able to help the three of them in their quest to defeat Voldemort. What if they had written her off as loony as well? What if they wanted nothing to do with her and maybe even joined in on the mocking? They may have never saved the wizarding world.
I propose that something similar may be true in our lives. Not that we are in some epic quest to save the world from a man with no nose and need a strange girl to help us out, but rather that we can benefit from being friends with those who the world thinks is different. We may miss out on the oportunity to make a great friend or even change our life because we look at someone's outside appearance or actions, and judge them as different. Maybe because of what we learn through Luna, the next time we see someone who is strange instead of thinking how much we want to avoid them, we may think "I wonder just how awesome they really are."
The lesson we can learn is actually two fold. Not only should we not be afraid of what is different, but we shouldn't be afraid of being different. Just because Luna has dissociation doesn't mean she had as different as she is. She chose to be herself. It is okay to be true to who you are, even if some people are so insecure that they feel they need to label you as "strange." When you are yourself, the friends you make are your true friends and true friends have a greater impact on one another.
